How to protect your induction hob cooktop

For many years, gas ranges were considered as the best way to cook, with the advantages of even heat and quick heating. But induction cooktops are starting to catch on in popularity, they are known to be more efficient, typically faster, cleaner and safer than gas cooktops.

However, they can still get scratched or damaged under improper use or long-term use, so the following tips will help you to protect the induction hob.

  • Clean Up After Every Use: You will have the easiest effort cleaning the surface if you clean it up after every meal. However, we have all been there – a basic dish somehow has splatters and drops over the gloosy cooktop. It is always challenging to clean the glass top because the mess can’t be wiped clean with cold water, you have to wait for it to cool down. And if you don’t clean the glass every time, the residue will become severe and nasty which may need heavy cleaning by vinegar or ceramic cleaner.
  • Avoid using rough cookwares: Same like any surface that is used regularly, there is a risk of scratches developing on the glass cooktop. While induction hobs are no more susceptible to scratches than any other type of cooktop, there are some things that can give rise to scratches to occur. Always using pots designed for induction hobs, the flat-bottomed cookwares are best of your choice, and the rough-bottomed skillets or saucepans may cause scratches.
  • Move the pans in the right way: In addition to using cleaning agents onto the glass, an excellent way to avoid scratches from occurring on the top is to be mindful of how you are moving the pans or pots around the cooktop surface. When moving cookware, it is a good idea to lift them, you should ensure that do not drag the pan accross the cooktop, rather lift it and put it down on another surface.
  • Avoid harmful abrasives or scratchy scrubbers: Do not use detergents or cleaners that don’t marked as safe for use on induction cooktops. Scrubbing compounds can leave behind minute scratches that cloud the surface of the cooktop. For example, window cleaning spray has ammonia which will permanently stain the glass surface of the cooktop. Instead, white vinegar is a great and natural cleaner with weaker acid that can help cleaning effectively.

What is the smart and easy way to protect the cooktop

There is one catch.

You are constantly cleaning up the induction cooktop, and seems like it never ends.

Here is a smart and easy way to protect the cooktop, the most popular induction hob protectors are silicone induction mats reinforced with fiberglass that can be placed on the cooktop all the time, offering all-round protection for your induction hob cooktops.

So the smart thing to do is getting a hob protector! Then no need constantly cleaning up and carefully following the tips.

KitchenRaku Natural Series Induction Cooktop Cover

What is an induction cooktop hob protector?

Since the induction cooktop features a ceramic glass surface, it is possible to scratch it during daily use and wear. In fact, hard water stains, white marks and burned foods behind also often occur, and the hob protector eliminates the chance of scratching or messing your new induction cooktop.

Hob protector is made of food-grade silicone coated fiberglass fabric, it is non-stick, heat resistant and reusable, this mat can be cooked with all kinds of cookwares which are suitable for induction stove.

The silicone surface has high force of friction, which means that your cookware will not slide around during your cooking. The heavy cast iron with rough bottom can be used without worry of the scratching, and the protector is especially handy for fixing the heavy cast iron cookware when you cook.

The hob protector can be tossed into dishwasher or rinsed down in the sink by easy cleaning up. Your time will be saved without cleaning any cooking residue off your cooktop.

Different shapes or sizes are offering to match your single burner or full induction cooktop.

Do not use the hob protector onto the regular electric ceramic cooktop, cause the regular cooktops use a higher temperature that will melt or burn silicone. Tips, if you can use glassware, ceramic or aluminum cookware onto your cooktop without steel bottom, then your cooktop is not an induction cooktop.

Advantages of using an induction cooktop hob protector

  • Protect cooktop and extend lifespan: Induction Protective Mats are the perfect induction accessories, for maximizing the lifespan of your induction cooktop and keeping it always clean. Unwanted scratches and stains can be avoided by the hob protector, the heat diffusing during cooking can extend the lifetime of the induction cooktops (Magnetic).
  • Platinum food grade siliconeMade from specially designed fiberglass coated with food grade liquid platinum silicone (BPA free). These mats are reusable, 100% non-stick, and heat resistant to 450℉.
  • Cook safely and easy to clean: The nonslip surface keeps pots and pans from sliding during cooking and allows you to cook safely. These mats are flexible and durable, easy to clean, and dishwasher safe. The hanging hole design can help you dry and store it easily.
  • Perfect for more kitchen appliances: These multifunctional silicone mats can be used as air fryer mats, microwave mats,s and oven baking mats. The set of 2 mats can help you to achieve more functions like a trivet, placemat, pot holder, grip support, food cover, utensil rest, etc.

Customers need environmental friendly options for home appliances, one of the most important reason is energy efficiency, especially under the Europe’s energy crisis: How can consumers reduce their electricity bills in Kitchen?

In this blog, firstly we will break down the working principle of induction cooktops and traditional cookers, to determine which one is the best option for an eco-friendly kitchen.

Secondly, we will test whether the induction cooktop mats will affect the heating efficiency.

Induction cooktops working principle

Do induction cooktop mats decrease heating efficiency?Let me explain further.

Heat is produced through electromagnetic reaction between suitable cookware and the coiled copper underneath the hob surface. Here, suitable refers to magnetic induction compatible.

That is to say, if the pan can attract and hold a magnet, it is suitable for induction burners. This is an easy way to tell whether your cookware works on induction hobs. Usually, pans and pots which contain conducive, ferrous metal are induction-friendly. While aluminum or aluminum clad, copper or copper clad, aluminum foil, glass/ceramic and some stainless steel products cannot work on induction hobs.

As for traditional kitchen heating units like gas, ceramic and electric stoves, thermal conduction is how they produce heat to cook. In the cooking process, heat is transferred from the hotter end–the glass/ceramic surface of cooktops to the colder end–the cookware and food inside.

During the process, much heat is lost on the halfway to food, wasted in heating the hob tops and the air around. We can tell it if touching the tops after moving away the cookware even some time after cooking.

Induction cooktop

From the comparison of working principles, we can come to a conclusion that induction cooking is instant, more efficient and more flexible in controlling temperature.

Induction cooktop mats

Thus, due to the nature of electromagnetic reaction, when it comes to whether silicone induction protecting mats would affect the heating efficiency, the answer is definitely no.

induction cooktop mats
induction cooktop mats

Just imagine the senario in which two magnets still stick to each other regardless of a silicone mat in between. The main variables of an induction hob’s energy efficiency usually include voltage, the coiled copper and cookware. Apart from the induction cooker itself, the factor which effects the speed and heat conduction rate is the bottom of the cookware. If it is not flat because of design or stain, the heating efficiency would decrease.

What’s more, we made a testing to check the heat efficiency, one is using the mat, the another is without the mat.

To conclude, induction cooktop mats don’t lower the heating efficiency of induction hobs because they are not magnetic compatible. In the opposite, they are helpful for more even heat distribution for they creating a flat, especially for those pans with uneven bottoms . It maximizes the contact between cookware and induction surface.

As a result, food receive evenly distributed heat. In fact, on top of remaining the high energy efficiency, the induction cooktop mats can also protect the glass top of hobs from extremely high temperature, extending their life spans. For further reading, please click the next blog

Silicone will flex when hot, but won’t melt until exposed to 500 degrees Fahrenheit / 260 degrees Celsius. As most baking instructions stay under 400 degrees Fahrenheit / 204 degrees Celsius, melting should not be an issue.

When choosing silicone cookware and bakeware, flex and twist the silicone material and look for white layers or flecks. These non-colored layers may well be fillers and can make that piece of silicone cookware unsafe under high heat.

For silicone to be usable as bakeware, it must be integrous. That means that it can’t pick up flavors from your batter or dish soap.

If you find that your blueberry muffins taste like the last batch of banana muffins or worse, soap, be sure to grease the cups before using.

Should you find that flavor contamination continues, consider discarding the bakeware.

Which Sizes Could be Chose

Write down the burner or hob dimensions and keep them handy when buying cooktop covers. Note that the magnetic area on the pan base may be smaller than the pan’s diameter. It is the magnetic area on the base that needs to fit the cooker’s burner. That’s why you need to try them out – check the sizes of your burners and cookwares.

See all our cooktop covers sizes here:

As we discussed in the previous article , although induction cooktops hold a lead place in energy efficiency, cost performance and safety issues among all cooking methods, there are still some minor problems we might come across when using them such as uneven heating, inevitable scratches and wear, tedious cleaning work.

It is these problems that hasten the birth of magnetic mats. In the following, I would explain how they deal with main limitations of induction cookers and should be a must-have for household and commercial kitchens.

Do magnetic mats Work?

Yes, magnetic mats do work! They safeguard against spillages and cushion the blows if you accidentally drop utensils or pans on the glass top, not only that but magnetic mat pads can also help prevent pans from sliding about. These protective mats are also great if you need additional countertop space to chop vegetables or prep other food.

Are magnetic mat any Good?

Yes, they are! The silicone rubber is usually reinforced with fibreglass, making the protector’s surface tough, but cushioned. It can be left in place while you cook as it’s reliably heat-resistant with low to medium temperatures. A protector saves spillages drying onto the glass, making it easy to clean your hob.

An induction hob top protector is far superior to using paper towels, which can actually scratch the glass. A cotton tea towel can be placed over the hob, but it scorches at fairly modest temperatures, leaving unsightly marks on the glass. Also, paper and cotton won’t prevent objects from cracking the glass.

Induction Cooktop Wear

The induction cooktop is the latest advancement in cooking technology which due to its superior performance and safety is a valuable asset to millions of consumers. Unlike gas or electric cooktops, induction technology cooks food by using electromagnetic energy. So compared to other types of cooktops, there are fewer parts that can fail. What does happen is that as time passes in their life span, induction cooktops decrease in power? How do induction hob mats extend the lifespan of induction cookers?

Loss of power leads to longer cooking times. How long? Well, that depends on the manufacturer and the model.

How to Find Out the Lifespan of Your Induction Cooktop?

When buying an induction cooker, ask about the expected hours and the lifespan of the cooktop unit along with the warranty. The lifetime hours of the product is an indication of how long you can expect it to operate without a decrease in performance. Usually, models with components designed for domestic use will typically last for 2500 hours. It is equivalent to 10 hours a day for about a year.

Do note that they are not designed for continuous usage. There is an increased likelihood that you will witness a significant decrease in performance much earlier.

Hob mats can diffuse heat and add strength

The second reason why induction hob mats could add the lifespan is that induction hob mats help diffuse the heat of hot cook. Thanks to it, the temperature of induction cooker glass and the coiled copper beneath won’t raise too high in a short time, which improves the body quality of induction cooker. Besides, the induction hob mats ease the stress of heavy cookware like those made of cast iron.

Minimizing scratches and traces of use

Scratches and wearing are inevitable through long-time or improper usage and lack of care. It is without saying that induction hob mats can largely protect the hobs from exterior damage.

Why should you choose induction cooktops other than an electric/ceramic/gas stove?

We would like to introduce the benefits of Induction Cooktops as follows.

  • Faster-Higher Heat Efficiency

In terms of heating speed and efficiency, an induction cooktop far outweighs other common cooking units. This advantage can be attributed to its unique operating principle. In short, induction hobs don’t generate heat on the surface to heat the pans (thermal conduction), instead, it induces heat directly in them in electromagnetic ways with no delay. When the induction cooker is turned on, an electric current is fed through a coiled copper wire beneath the cooking surface, creating a magnetic field. Meanwhile, any magnetic-reactive cookware(made of magnetic metal) that enters this field would produce heat from inside, which directly acts on food in the cookware. On the other hand, traditional gas or electric cooking uses an outside heat source–heating the cooktop surface first then transferring heat to food.

As a result, induction cooktops are faster and more energy efficient. According to scientific research, the poorest energy conversion rate of induction cooktops comes to 86%, while the highest rate of ceramic stoves can only reach 60%.

  • Economical-Less Energy Consumption

We are facing an increasingly severe energy crisis nowadays. In the European continent, due to Russia’s suspension of gas supply, gas is in short demand and the chain reaction is the soaring price of electricity. What’s worse, the upcoming cold winter aggravates the imbalance between energy demands and supplies. In a tough period like this, induction cooktops are undoubtedly the wisest choice for households and businesses because of relatively low energy consumption. With an average 90% use ratio of electricity produced channelled to cookwares, an induction cooktop is more economical than other traditional cooking units in reducing 70% of electricity consumption.

  • Safer-No More Worktop Burns

It is common sense that we will get burned if we touch the surface of a traditional gas/ceramic/electric hob. Another hidden danger is the fire hazard caused by the flames, ignition or high temperature. However, there are some rare occasions we are too careless to avoid more or less, not to mention our children. In this sense, induction cookers are much safer in easing our worries about worktop burns. Because the heat only generates in pans which can be deemed as magnetic conductors, obviously our hands do not belong to this category.

Problems You Might Have during Daily Use of Induction Cooktops (Limitations)

To achieve even heating, the pan on the burner must be quite flat. The space between the glass surface and the metal on the pan is also important that if there is powder, water or dirt, the heating process would also be uneven. Furthermore, square pans, such as those used for frying, do not match the ’round’ coils under the glass. Thus, you would get blind angles when using cookers other than round. This also implies that the pan must be precisely centered over the coil.

  • Scratches and Trace of Use

Since the induction cooktop features a ceramic glass surface, it is possible to scratch it during daily use and wear. In fact, hard water stains, white marks and burned foods behind also often occur.

  • Never-Ending Cleaning

  • You are constantly cleaning up the induction cooktop, and seems like it never ends. You will have the easiest effort cleaning the surface if you clean it up after every meal. However, we have all been there – a basic dish somehow has splatters and drops over the glossy cooktop. It is always challenging to clean the glass top because the mess cannot be wiped clean with cold water, you have to wait for it to cool down. And if you do not clean the glass every time, the residue will become severe and nasty which may need heavy cleaning with vinegar or ceramic cleaner.
